Why mitered corners open up

A joint that looked perfect on installation day and has a visible gap by the second winter usually wasn't the carpenter's cut — it was the wood moving. Trim brought straight from an unheated truck into a heated house will shrink after it's nailed up.

Letting material acclimate before it goes on the wall costs a couple of days and prevents the single most common finish complaint there is. It's the sort of step that's invisible when you do it and obvious when you don't.

Matching what's already in the house

Older houses often have trim profiles you can't buy off a rack any more. Sometimes the answer is a knife ground to match; sometimes it's building the profile up from two or three stock pieces so it reads correctly from the room.

Either way the goal is that new work doesn't announce itself. If you can tell where we started, we didn't do it right.
